I spoke about how to prevent advocate burnout at a recent Women in Government
Relations (WGR) conference. With members of the WGR PAC, Politics &
Grassroots Task Force, l to r: Task Force Co-Chair Christy Kendall of
the National Association of Mutual Insurance Companies, Co-Chair ElissaDodge
of the American Public Transportation Association, me, Susan Goldberg
of the Girl Scouts of America, and Sue Pechilio Polisof the American
Heart Association.
Progressive organizations understand the value
in applying science to how we influence the public, stakeholders, and
legislators. I facilitated a persuasion and influence workshop with
Dow Chemical's Government Affairs team. Above, l to r: Janet Boyd, Manager
of Government Affairs, Bob Charlton, Vice President, Global Public Affairs
(formerly), and Gina Gibbs, Communications Manager. Gina was our influence
guru for a day, having scored the highest on my "influence quotient"
quiz.
Real-world application exercises increase learning
retention. Here, Vicky Suazo, Dow's Director of Political Affairs, (l)
and Lisa Rickard, Vice President of Government Affairs (formerly), plot
their influence strategy for an actual workplace situation.
Here I am with Meaghan Killion, Grassroots Manager, and Ann Devlin,
IDFA's former PAC Coordinator, at the IDFA's annual Dairy Forum.
I was privileged
to help the International Dairy Foods Association design their first
ever grassroots achievement award for their member companies. The
first winner of the GRAND (Grassroots Action Network for Dairy) Pioneer
award is Prairie Farms of Carlinville, Illinois. With only 250 employees,
they were able to realize significance results from various employee
mobilizations, including securing a key U.S. Senator's vote (a traditional
opponent) on a critical issue. Don Kullman, pictured above, stated
that , "With our grassroots network, all of our U.S. Representatives
and Senators now know who we are, and they know our issues."
Above, l to r: Kathleen Nelson, Director of Legislative Affairs, IDFA,
Don Kullman, Prairie Farms Dairy, Connie Tipton, Senior Group Vice
President, IDFA, and Meaghan Killion, Grassroots Manager, IDFA.

With John Willey, Director of Government Affairs for Anthem Blue Cross
Blue Shield. The candy necklaces were a gift to John, who knows how to
accessorize. He is a fashion tsunami!
Tracy Winn and John Willey of Anthem. Tracy is the Grassroots
and PAC Manager at Anthem. She told me she "loves people"----a prerequisite
for any grassroots or PAC position.
Here I am with Sue Pechilio-Polis of the American Heart
Association (formerly with The Association for Advanced Life Underwriting). Sue's
Key Contact network at AALU experienced the most results with the fewest
members of Key Contacts I have ever worked with...a real-life example
of quality grassroots.
Here I am with a grassroots innovator, Catherine Grant,
Director of Grassroots for the National Audubon Society at their Leader
Lobby Day.
My consultative staff trainings with the American Heart
Association were great fun and well-produced, thanks to the AHA staff.
Here, my traveling partners take a well-deserved break, l to r: Maria
Peralta, Advocacy Manager, Office of Public Advocacy (formerly), and AHA Special
Projects Manager, Renee Smith.
Community Relations staff from Utilicorp United work on
a volunteer recruitment exercise, l to r: Dan McGee, Dennis Eich, and
Marv Oppedal.
My face never lies! Someone obviously said something that
violated my knowledge of what grassroots can accomplish in the legislative
arena.
