THE CHALLENGE
A national non-profit
organization with a sterling reputation wanted Presidential, U.S.
Senate and Congressional candidates to acknowledge the importance
of their issue in a public forum. The organization wanted to help
their volunteers and staff understand the nexus between personal
advocacy and government funding of research, access to testing, patient's
rights, etc.
THE TSG SOLUTIONS
Our counsel and
projects included, but were not limited to:
-
Designing and
conducting educational trainings and materials to help volunteers
who were never active advocates become confident interacting
with
lawmakers in the special settings.
-
Facilitating
the advocate's identification and articulation of impactful personal
stories.
-
Empowering
staff to perpetuate the advocacy culture within their state
organizations
by developing internal advocacy "sales" strategies,
goal setting and measurement instruments.
RESULTS
We transformed
the organizations' messengers from inactive, unsure grassroots volunteers
to assured evangelists for their cause. The momentum of these results
carried over across the country. It has made advocacy an integral
part of the organization, transforming the organization's culture.
The following
were the quantitative results over several months in just one state:
-
over 140 personal
volunteer contacts with candidates;
-
six campaign
staff informational meetings;
-
eleven features
on talk radio programs;
-
four editorial
board visits; and,
-
thirty-five
newspaper articles.
"This
represented the first time our organization ever achieved
this type of attention from candidates during campaign season.
Best
of all, we did it through real people, thus enhancing our
credibility with candidates and lawmakers."
