"One of the keys to keeping good volunteers is to improve your services for those who are using them, instead of worrying about who isn't using them. Find out what makes your active participants stay with your program and do more of it."

Quarterly Poll
What's the number one grassroots or PAC challenge you did not address in 2001?

Grassroots Evangelism:

"Evangelism is a process of getting people not just to join your cause, but to believe in it so much that they are compelled to make converts for you because they believe it is in other people's self interest, not the interest of the company or the organization, to join."
PRIME FIBS . . . . JUICY MORSELS THAT ARE NOT WHAT THEY SEEM
PART TWO

Do you ever wonder where certain "laws" of public affairs management and strategy are initiated, and how they are accepted into the mainstream thoughts and practices of paid professionals? Do you ever question why we take advice from certain "experts?"

This article is part two in a series which will uncover some of the more egregious pieces of advice we have heard from public affairs "experts." Click here to get the answers and read the complete article . . .If you missed part one, click here

"Why did PhRMA hire Amy Showalter? We were seeking to hold the PhRMA standard of excellence high and believe that all PhRMA member company grassroots representatives deserve the most effective grassroots expert available. Personally, I enjoyed working with Amy so much because her one-on-one grassroots coaching kept me focused on my program goals. Amy's attention motivated me to fulfill each goal and create long term strategic plans for the future of PhRMA's Grassroots Program."

Director, Alliance Development

THE 2001 ALL-SHOWALTER TEAM

It's that time of year again, to announce the 2001 All-Showalter Team. The All-Showalter Team is comprised of government relations who embody one or more necessary qualities of a grassroots avatar. A few people in organizations appear twice, and there are "ties" in certain categories. Click here to read the complete article . . .

New Conference Opportunity for Senior Level Grassroots, PAC and Government Affairs Professionals!

TSG is proud to be one of the primary Co-Hosts for the inaugural Innovate to Motivate/National Conference for Political Involvement Professionals, to be held in Orlando Jan. 31-Feb. 2, 2002.

A couple of the many program highlights include the unveiling of the latest research on Congressional communications from Dr. Michael Lord, as well as results from our original Fortune "Power 25" research which reveals how the country's most powerful lobbying groups find, keep and motivate their best grassroots advocates.

How is this conference different from other conferences for government affairs professionals?

  • The conference was designed with the input of over 40 top grassroots, PAC and lobbying professionals.
  • Our conference represents an advanced curriculum - we will focus on results, not theory.
  • "Quality control" - all of our speakers' presentations have been screened for high content and previous speaking experience. Many speakers submitted proposals to speak at this conference.
  • Because we don't want your conference notes to stay in a file, we are offering free post-conference coaching from our faculty and Co-Hosts to continue your learning and development.

Enhancing the Communication Effectiveness Of Your Grassroots Advocates, Part 1
    By Greg Coker

While political pundits across the country agree on little, most predict the future of politics is grassroots. Gone are the days when one or two lobbyists can carry the votes for any association, corporation or cause. However, It's not uncommon to see a few lobbyists at the Capitol standing around wondering why their individual influence is not as powerful as it used to be. While personal relationships are still very important, knowing the speaker, a committee chair or floor leader will not guarantee your success. Read the complete article, click here . . .

Are There Grassroots and PAC Opportunities After 9-11?

As referenced in the last newsletter, there is great deal of energy among Americans to do something for their country. The patriotic fervor has resulted in people who are looking to channel their energy in support of American ideals. In fact, my participation in various clients' grassroots training workshops has shown a marked increase in attendance and enthusiasm for these events.

What are grassroots and PAC professionals doing after 9-11 to increase participation in grassroots and PAC programs? Click here . . .

Founding Brothers - The Revolutionary Generation, Joseph J. Ellis

Despite the fact that Joseph Ellis has been suspended from his professorship at Mount Holyoke College due to lying about his service in Vietnam, this book is a wonderful collection of interactions between our nation's Founders.

He examines the lives of James Madison, Alexander Hamilton, Aaron Burr, George Washington, John Adams, Benjamin Franklin, and Thomas Jefferson. Ellis demonstrates that the Founding Brothers were antagonists at times, as well as brothers with a history- changing vision. He also dissects their exclusion of the slavery question, which was a result of their obsession with seeing the Revolution come to fruition. Founding Brothers gives us a perspective on the interpersonal forces that changed history, and teaches us some lessons about group behavior and organizational dynamics.
